ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

करण कारण प्रभु एकु है दूसर नाही कोइ ॥
God alone is the Doer of deeds -
there is no other at all.

The Doer, the Cause of causes, is
potent to do anything.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
Jo This Bhaavai Soee Hog ||
जो तिसु भावै सोई होगु ॥
That which pleases Him, comes to
pass.
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
Khin Mehi Thhaap
Outhhaapanehaaraa ||
खिन महि थापि उथापनहारा ॥
In an instant, He creates and
destroys.
ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
Anth Nehee Kishh Paaraavaaraa ||
अंतु नही किछु पारावारा ॥
He has no end or limitation.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਧਰ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥
Hukamae Dhhaar Adhhar Rehaavai ||
हुकमे धारि अधर रहावै ॥
By His Order, He established the
earth, and He maintains it unsupported.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
Hukamae Oupajai Hukam Samaavai ||
हुकमे उपजै हुकमि समावै ॥
By His Order, the world was
created; by His Order, it shall merge again into Him.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥
Hukamae Ooch Neech Biouhaar ||
हुकमे ऊच नीच बिउहार ॥
By His Order, one's occupation is
high or low.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਰੰਗ ਪਰਕਾਰ ॥
Hukamae Anik Rang Parakaar ||
हुकमे अनिक रंग परकार ॥
By His Order, there are so many
colors and forms.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Kar Kar Dhaekhai Apanee Vaddiaaee
||
करि करि देखै अपनी वडिआई ॥
Having created the Creation, He
beholds His own greatness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

प्रभ भावै मानुख गति पावै ॥
If it pleases God, one attains
salvation.

Tharaavai ||
प्रभ भावै ता पाथर तरावै ॥
If it pleases God, then even
stones can swim.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਸ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੈ ॥

प्रभ भावै बिनु सास ते राखै ॥
If it pleases God, the body is
preserved, even without the breath of life.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਭਾਖੈ ॥

प्रभ भावै ता हरि गुण भाखै ॥
If it pleases God, then one chants
the Lord's Glorious Praises.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥

Oudhhaarai ||
प्रभ भावै ता पतित उधारै ॥
If it pleases God, then even
sinners are saved.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੈ ਆਪਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
Aap Karai Aapan Beechaarai ||
आपि करै आपन बीचारै ॥
He Himself acts, and He Himself
contemplates.
ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
Dhuhaa Siriaa Kaa Aap Suaamee ||
दुहा सिरिआ का आपि सुआमी ॥
He Himself is the Master of both
worlds.
ਖੇਲੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Khaelai Bigasai Antharajaamee ||
खेलै बिगसै अंतरजामी ॥
He plays and He enjoys; He is the
Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥
Jo Bhaavai So Kaar Karaavai ||
जो भावै सो कार करावै ॥
As He wills, He causes actions to
be done.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥

Tell me - what can a mere mortal
do?

जो तिसु भावै सोई करावै ॥
Whatever pleases God is what He
causes us to do.
ਇਸ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੇਇ ॥

If it were in our hands, we would
grab up everything.

जो तिसु भावै सोई करेइ ॥
Whatever pleases God - that is
what He does.
ਅਨਜਾਨਤ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਚੈ ॥
Anajaanath Bikhiaa Mehi Rachai ||
अनजानत बिखिआ महि रचै ॥
Through ignorance, people are
engrossed in corruption.
ਜੇ ਜਾਨਤ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਬਚੈ ॥
Jae Jaanath Aapan Aap Bachai ||
जे जानत आपन आप बचै ॥
If they knew better, they would
save themselves.
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
Bharamae Bhoolaa Dheh Dhis
Dhhaavai ||
भरमे भूला दह दिसि धावै ॥
Deluded by doubt, they wander
around in the ten directions.
ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

निमख माहि चारि कुंट फिरि आवै ॥
In an instant, their minds go
around the four corners of the world and come back again.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥

करि किरपा जिसु अपनी भगति देइ ॥
Those whom the Lord mercifully
blesses with His devotional worship

- O Nanak, they are absorbed into

Khin Mehi Neech Keett Ko Raaj ||
खिन महि नीच कीट कउ राज ॥
In an instant, the lowly worm is
transformed into a king.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥
Paarabreham Gareeb Nivaaj ||
पारब्रहम गरीब निवाज ॥
The Supreme Lord God is the
Protector of the humble.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

जा का द्रिसटि कछू न आवै ॥
Even one who has never been seen
at all,
ਤਿਸੁ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵੈ ॥

तिसु ततकाल दह दिस प्रगटावै ॥
Becomes instantly famous in the
ten directions.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰੈ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥
Jaa Ko Apunee Karai Bakhasees ||
जा कउ अपुनी करै बखसीस ॥
And that one upon whom He bestows
His blessings
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਨ ਗਨੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥
Thaa Kaa Laekhaa N Ganai
Jagadhees ||
ता का लेखा न गनै जगदीस ॥
The Lord of the world does not
hold him to his account.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Jeeo Pindd Sabh This Kee Raas ||
जीउ पिंडु सभ तिस की रासि ॥
Soul and body are all His
property.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥

घटि घटि पूरन ब्रहम प्रगास ॥
Each and every heart is
illuminated by the Perfect Lord God.

अपनी बणत आपि बनाई ॥
He Himself fashioned His own
handiwork.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਡਾਈ ॥੪॥

Nanak lives by beholding His

There is no power in the hands of
mortal beings;

The Doer, the Cause of causes is
the Lord of all.
ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਜੀਉ ॥

आगिआकारी बपुरा जीउ ॥
The helpless beings are subject to
His Command.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਥੀਉ ॥

जो तिसु भावै सोई फुनि थीउ ॥
That which pleases Him, ultimately
comes to pass.
ਕਬਹੂ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੈ ॥
Kabehoo Ooch Neech Mehi Basai ||
कबहू ऊच नीच महि बसै ॥
Sometimes, they abide in
exaltation; sometimes, they are depressed.
ਕਬਹੂ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਸੈ ॥
Kabehoo Sog Harakh Rang Hasai ||
कबहू सोग हरख रंगि हसै ॥
Sometimes, they are sad, and
sometimes they laugh with joy and delight.
ਕਬਹੂ ਨਿੰਦ ਚਿੰਦ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥
Kabehoo Nindh Chindh Biouhaar ||
कबहू निंद चिंद बिउहार ॥
Sometimes, they are occupied with
slander and anxiety.
ਕਬਹੂ ਊਭ ਅਕਾਸ ਪਇਆਲ ॥
Kabehoo Oobh Akaas Paeiaal ||
कबहू ऊभ अकास पइआल ॥
Sometimes, they are high in the
Akaashic Ethers, sometimes in the nether regions of the underworld.
ਕਬਹੂ ਬੇਤਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

कबहू बेता ब्रहम बीचार ॥
Sometimes, they know the
contemplation of God.

Sometimes, they dance in various

कबहू सोइ रहै दिनु राति ॥
Sometimes, they remain asleep day
and night.
ਕਬਹੂ ਮਹਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
Kabehoo Mehaa Krodhh Bikaraal ||
कबहू महा क्रोध बिकराल ॥
Sometimes, they are awesome, in
terrible rage.
ਕਬਹੂੰ ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਹੋਤ ਰਵਾਲ ॥
Kabehoon Sarab Kee Hoth Ravaal ||
कबहूं सरब की होत रवाल ॥
Sometimes, they are the dust of
the feet of all.
ਕਬਹੂ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੈ ਬਡ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
Kabehoo Hoe Behai Badd Raajaa ||
कबहू होइ बहै बड राजा ॥
Sometimes, they sit as great
kings.
ਕਬਹੁ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਨੀਚ ਕਾ ਸਾਜਾ ॥
Kabahu Bhaekhaaree Neech Kaa
Saajaa ||
कबहु भेखारी नीच का साजा ॥
Sometimes, they wear the coat of a
lowly beggar.
ਕਬਹੂ ਅਪਕੀਰਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
Kabehoo Apakeerath Mehi Aavai ||
कबहू अपकीरति महि आवै ॥
Sometimes, they come to have evil
reputations.
ਕਬਹੂ ਭਲਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
Kabehoo Bhalaa Bhalaa Kehaavai ||
कबहू भला भला कहावै ॥
Sometimes, they are known as very,
very good.
ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਵ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ॥
Jio Prabh Raakhai Thiv Hee Rehai

जिउ प्रभु राखै तिव ही रहै ॥
As God keeps them, so they remain.

Sometimes, as scholars, they
deliver lectures.

Dhhiaan ||
कबहू मोनिधारी लावै धिआनु ॥
Sometimes, they hold to silence in
deep meditation.
ਕਬਹੂ ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥
Kabehoo Thatt Theerathh Eisanaan
||
कबहू तट तीरथ इसनान ॥
Sometimes, they take cleansing
baths at places of pilgrimage.
ਕਬਹੂ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ॥
Kabehoo Sidhh Saadhhik Mukh Giaan

कबहू सिध साधिक मुखि गिआन ॥
Sometimes, as Siddhas or seekers,
they impart spiritual wisdom.
ਕਬਹੂ ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਆ ॥
Kabehoo Keett Hasath Pathang Hoe
Jeeaa ||
कबहू कीट हसति पतंग होइ जीआ ॥
Sometimes, they becomes worms,
elephants, or moths.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਭਰਮੀਆ ॥
Anik Jon Bharamai Bharameeaa ||
अनिक जोनि भरमै भरमीआ ॥
They may wander and roam through
countless incarnations.
ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਜਿਉ ਸ੍ਵਾਗੀ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥

नाना रूप जिउ स्वागी दिखावै ॥
In various costumes, like actors,
they appear.
ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਨਚਾਵੈ ॥

जिउ प्रभ भावै तिवै नचावै ॥
As it pleases God, they dance.

जो तिसु भावै सोई होइ ॥
Whatever pleases Him, comes to
pass.

नानक दूजा अवरु न कोइ ॥७॥
O Nanak, there is no other at all.

कबहू साधसंगति इहु पावै ॥
Sometimes, this being attains the
Company of the Holy.
ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
Ous Asathhaan Thae Bahur N Aavai
||
उसु असथान ते बहुरि न आवै ॥
From that place, he does not have
to come back again.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਗਿਆਨ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
Anthar Hoe Giaan Paragaas ||
अंतरि होइ गिआन परगासु ॥
The light of spiritual wisdom
dawns within.
ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
Ous Asathhaan Kaa Nehee Binaas ||
उसु असथान का नही बिनासु ॥
That place does not perish.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
Man Than Naam Rathae Eik Rang ||
मन तन नामि रते इक रंगि ॥
The mind and body are imbued with
the Love of the Naam, the Name of the One Lord.
ਸਦਾ ਬਸਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

सदा बसहि पारब्रहम कै संगि ॥
He dwells forever with the Supreme
Lord God.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਲੁ ਆਇ ਖਟਾਨਾ ॥
Jio Jal Mehi Jal Aae Khattaanaa
||
जिउ जल महि जलु आइ खटाना ॥
As water comes to blend with
water,
ਤਿਉ ਜੋਤੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
Thio Jothee Sang Joth Samaanaa ||
तिउ जोती संगि जोति समाना ॥
His light blends into the Light.
ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਗਵਨ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
Mitt Geae Gavan Paaeae Bisraam ||
मिटि गए गवन पाए बिस्राम ॥
Reincarnation is ended, and
eternal peace is found.

सुखी बसै मसकीनीआ आपु निवारि तले ॥
The humble beings abide in peace;
subduing egotism, they are meek.
ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥

बडे बडे अहंकारीआ नानक गरबि गले ॥१॥
The very proud and arrogant

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Jis Kai Anthar Raaj Abhimaan ||
जिस कै अंतरि राज अभिमानु ॥
One who has the pride of power
within,
ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
So Narakapaathee Hovath Suaan ||
सो नरकपाती होवत सुआनु ॥
Shall dwell in hell, and become a
dog.
ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ ॥
Jo Jaanai Mai Jobanavanth ||
जो जानै मै जोबनवंतु ॥
One who deems himself to have the
beauty of youth,
ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
So Hovath Bisattaa Kaa Janth ||
सो होवत बिसटा का जंतु ॥
Shall become a maggot in manure.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
Aapas Ko Karamavanth Kehaavai ||
आपस कउ करमवंतु कहावै ॥
One who claims to act virtuously,
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ ॥
Janam Marai Bahu Jon Bhramaavai
||
जनमि मरै बहु जोनि भ्रमावै ॥
Shall live and die, wandering
through countless reincarnations.
ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
Dhhan Bhoom Kaa Jo Karai Gumaan
||
धन भूमि का जो करै गुमानु ॥
One who takes pride in wealth and
lands
ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
So Moorakh Andhhaa Agiaan ||
सो मूरखु अंधा अगिआनु ॥
Is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Jis Kai Hiradhai
Gareebee Basaavai ||
करि किरपा जिस कै हिरदै गरीबी बसावै ॥
One whose heart is mercifully
blessed with abiding humility,
ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

नानक ईहा मुकतु आगै सुखु पावै ॥१॥
O Nanak, is liberated here, and

धनवंता होइ करि गरबावै ॥
One who becomes wealthy and takes
pride in it
ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

त्रिण समानि कछु संगि न जावै ॥
Not even a piece of straw shall go
along with him.
ਬਹੁ ਲਸਕਰ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਸ ॥

बहु लसकर मानुख ऊपरि करे आस ॥
He may place his hopes on a large
army of men,
ਪਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
Pal Bheethar Thaa Kaa Hoe Binaas
||
पल भीतरि ता का होइ बिनास ॥
But he shall vanish in an instant.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਜਾਨੈ ਬਲਵੰਤੁ ॥
Sabh Thae Aap Jaanai Balavanth ||
सभ ते आप जानै बलवंतु ॥
One who deems himself to be the
strongest of all,
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ਭਸਮੰਤੁ ॥
Khin Mehi Hoe Jaae Bhasamanth ||
खिन महि होइ जाइ भसमंतु ॥
In an instant, shall be reduced to
ashes.
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਬਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
Kisai N Badhai Aap Ahankaaree ||
किसै न बदै आपि अहंकारी ॥
One who thinks of no one else
except his own prideful self.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥
Dhharam Raae This Karae Khuaaree
||
धरम राइ तिसु करे खुआरी ॥
The Righteous Judge of Dharma
shall expose his disgrace.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

Abhimaan ||
गुर प्रसादि जा का मिटै अभिमानु ॥
One who, by Guru's Grace,
eliminates his ego,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
So Jan Naanak Dharageh Paravaan

सो जनु नानक दरगह परवानु ॥२॥
O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the
Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
Kott Karam Karai Ho Dhhaarae ||
कोटि करम करै हउ धारे ॥
If someone does millions of good
deeds, while acting in ego,
ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ ॥
Sram Paavai Sagalae Birathhaarae
||
स्रमु पावै सगले बिरथारे ॥
He shall incur only trouble; all
this is in vain.
ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
Anik Thapasiaa Karae Ahankaar ||
अनिक तपसिआ करे अहंकार ॥
If someone performs great penance,
while acting in selfishness and conceit,
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
Narak Surag Fir Fir Avathaar ||
नरक सुरग फिरि फिरि अवतार ॥
He shall be reincarnated into heaven
and hell, over and over again.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ॥

अनिक जतन करि आतम नही द्रवै ॥
He makes all sorts of efforts, but
his soul is still not softened

हरि दरगह कहु कैसे गवै ॥
How can he go to the Court of the
Lord?
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
Aapas Ko Jo Bhalaa Kehaavai ||
आपस कउ जो भला कहावै ॥
One who calls himself good
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
Thisehi Bhalaaee Nikatt N Aavai

तिसहि भलाई निकटि न आवै ॥
Goodness shall not draw near him.
ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Sarab Kee Raen Jaa Kaa Man Hoe ||
सरब की रेन जा का मनु होइ ॥
One whose mind is the dust of all
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

कहु नानक ता की निरमल सोइ ॥३॥
- says Nanak, his reputation is

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Jab Lag Jaanai Mujh Thae Kashh
Hoe ||
जब लगु जानै मुझ ते कछु होइ ॥
As long as someone thinks that he is
the one who acts,
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
Thab Eis Ko Sukh Naahee Koe ||
तब इस कउ सुखु नाही कोइ ॥
He shall have no peace.
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
Jab Eih Jaanai Mai Kishh Karathaa

जब इह जानै मै किछु करता ॥
As long as this mortal thinks that
he is the one who does things,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥
Thab Lag Garabh Jon Mehi Firathaa
||
तब लगु गरभ जोनि महि फिरता ॥
He shall wander in reincarnation
through the womb.
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
Jab Dhhaarai Kooo Bairee Meeth ||
जब धारै कोऊ बैरी मीतु ॥
As long as he considers one an enemy,
and another a friend,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
Thab Lag Nihachal Naahee Cheeth
||
तब लगु निहचलु नाही चीतु ॥
His mind shall not come to rest.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
Jab Lag Moh Magan Sang Maae ||
जब लगु मोह मगन संगि माइ ॥
As long as he is intoxicated with
attachment to Maya,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
Thab Lag Dhharam Raae Dhaee
Sajaae ||
तब लगु धरम राइ देइ सजाइ ॥
The Righteous Judge shall punish
him.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥
Prabh Kirapaa Thae Bandhhan
Thoottai ||
प्रभ किरपा ते बंधन तूटै ॥
By God's Grace, his bonds are
shattered;
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥

गुर प्रसादि नानक हउ छूटै ॥४॥
By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is
eliminated. ||4||
ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
Sehas Khattae Lakh Ko Outh
Dhhaavai ||
सहस खटे लख कउ उठि धावै ॥
Earning a thousand, he runs after a
hundred thousand.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Paavai ||
त्रिपति न आवै माइआ पाछै पावै ॥
Satisfaction is not obtained by
chasing after Maya.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਕਰੈ ॥
Anik Bhog Bikhiaa Kae Karai ||
अनिक भोग बिखिआ के करै ॥
He may enjoy all sorts of corrupt
pleasures,
ਨਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੈ ॥
Neh Thripathaavai Khap Khap Marai
||
नह त्रिपतावै खपि खपि मरै ॥
But he is still not satisfied; he
indulges again and again, wearing himself out, until he dies.
ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਰਾਜੈ ॥
Binaa Santhokh Nehee Kooo Raajai
||
बिना संतोख नही कोऊ राजै ॥
Without contentment, no one is
satisfied.
ਸੁਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜੈ ॥
Supan Manorathh Brithhae Sabh
Kaajai ||
सुपन मनोरथ ब्रिथे सभ काजै ॥
Like the objects in a dream, all his
efforts are in vain.
ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Naam Rang Sarab Sukh Hoe ||
नाम रंगि सरब सुखु होइ ॥
Through the love of the Naam, all
peace is obtained.
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Baddabhaagee Kisai Paraapath Hoe
||
बडभागी किसै परापति होइ ॥
Only a few obtain this, by great
good fortune.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
Karan Karaavan Aapae Aap ||
करन करावन आपे आपि ॥
He Himself is Himself the Cause of
causes.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੫॥
Sadhaa Sadhaa Naanak Har Jaap ||5||
सदा सदा नानक हरि जापि ॥५॥
Forever and ever, O Nanak, chant the
Lord's Name. ||5||
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
Karan Karaavan Karanaihaar ||
करन करावन करनैहारु ॥
The Doer, the Cause of causes, is
the Creator Lord.
ਇਸ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Eis Kai Haathh Kehaa Beechaar ||
इस कै हाथि कहा बीचारु ॥
What deliberations are in the hands
of mortal beings?
ਜੈਸੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

जैसी द्रिसटि करे तैसा होइ ॥
As God casts His Glance of Grace,
they come to be.
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
Aapae Aap Aap Prabh Soe ||
आपे आपि आपि प्रभु सोइ ॥
God Himself, of Himself, is unto
Himself.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਅਪਨੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
Jo Kishh Keeno S Apanai Rang ||
जो किछु कीनो सु अपनै रंगि ॥
Whatever He created, was by His Own
Pleasure.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ਸਭਹੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
Sabh Thae Dhoor Sabhehoo Kai Sang
||
सभ ते दूरि सभहू कै संगि ॥
He is far from all, and yet with
all.
ਬੂਝੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥
Boojhai Dhaekhai Karai Bibaek ||
बूझै देखै करै बिबेक ॥
He understands, He sees, and He
passes judgment.
ਆਪਹਿ ਏਕ ਆਪਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
Aapehi Eaek Aapehi Anaek ||
आपहि एक आपहि अनेक ॥
He Himself is the One, and He
Himself is the many.
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Marai N Binasai Aavai N Jaae ||
मरै न बिनसै आवै न जाइ ॥
He does not die or perish; He does
not come or go.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

नानक सद ही रहिआ समाइ ॥६॥
O Nanak, He remains forever
All-pervading. ||6||

आपि उपदेसै समझै आपि ॥
He Himself instructs, and He Himself
learns.
ਆਪੇ ਰਚਿਆ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
Aapae Rachiaa Sabh Kai Saathh ||
आपे रचिआ सभ कै साथि ॥
He Himself mingles with all.
ਆਪਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਆਪਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
Aap Keeno Aapan Bisathhaar ||
आपि कीनो आपन बिसथारु ॥
He Himself created His own expanse.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਓਹੁ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
Sabh Kashh Ous Kaa Ouhu
Karanaihaar ||
सभु कछु उस का ओहु करनैहारु ॥
All things are His; He is the
Creator.
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Ous Thae Bhinn Kehahu Kishh Hoe
||
उस ते भिंन कहहु किछु होइ ॥
Without Him, what could be done?
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Thhaan Thhananthar Eaekai Soe ||
थान थनंतरि एकै सोइ ॥
In the spaces and interspaces, He is
the One.
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰ ॥
Apunae Chalith Aap Karanaihaar ||
अपुने चलित आपि करणैहार ॥
In His own play, He Himself is the
Actor.
ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਰੰਗ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
Kouthak Karai Rang Aapaar ||
कउतक करै रंग आपार ॥
He produces His plays with infinite
variety.
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
Man Mehi Aap Man Apunae Maahi ||
मन महि आपि मन अपुने माहि ॥
He Himself is in the mind, and the
mind is in Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
Naanak Keemath Kehan N Jaae ||7||
नानक कीमति कहनु न जाइ ॥७॥
O Nanak, His worth cannot be
estimated. ||7||

सति सति सति प्रभु सुआमी ॥
True, True, True is God, our Lord

True, True, True is the Creator of
all.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਬਿਰਲੈ ਚੀਨਾ ॥

कोटि मधे किनै बिरलै चीना ॥
Out of millions, scarcely anyone
knows Him.
