बहु सासत्र बहु सिम्रिती पेखे सरब ढढोलि ॥
The many Shaastras and the many
Simritees - I have seen and searched through them all.

जोग अभिआस करम ध्रम किरिआ ॥
The practice of Yoga and righteous
conduct;
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਬਨ ਮਧੇ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sagal Thiaag Ban Madhhae Firiaa
||
सगल तिआगि बन मधे फिरिआ ॥
The renunciation of everything and
wandering around in the wilderness;
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨਾ ॥
Anik Prakaar Keeeae Bahu Jathanaa
||
अनिक प्रकार कीए बहु जतना ॥
The performance of all sorts of
works;
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਹੋਮੇ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨਾ ॥
Punn Dhaan Homae Bahu Rathanaa ||
पुंन दान होमे बहु रतना ॥
Donations to charities and offerings
of jewels to fire;
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਇ ਹੋਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
Sareer Kattaae Homai Kar Raathee
||
सरीरु कटाइ होमै करि राती ॥
Cutting the body apart and making the
pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
Varath Naem Karai Bahu Bhaathee
||
वरत नेम करै बहु भाती ॥
Keeping fasts and making vows of all
sorts
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
Nehee Thul Raam Naam Beechaar ||
नही तुलि राम नाम बीचार ॥
- none of these are equal to the
contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥

O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants

नउ खंड प्रिथमी फिरै चिरु जीवै ॥
You may roam over the nine
continents of the world and live a very long life;
ਮਹਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਥੀਵੈ ॥
Mehaa Oudhaas Thapeesar Thheevai
||
महा उदासु तपीसरु थीवै ॥
You may become a great ascetic and a
master of disciplined meditation
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੋਮਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
Agan Maahi Homath Paraan ||
अगनि माहि होमत परान ॥
And burn yourself in fire;
ਕਨਿਕ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹੈਵਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨ ॥
Kanik Asv Haivar Bhoom Dhaan ||
कनिक अस्व हैवर भूमि दान ॥
You may give away gold, horses,
elephants and land;
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਨ ॥
Nioulee Karam Karai Bahu Aasan ||
निउली करम करै बहु आसन ॥
You may practice techniques of inner
cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures;
ਜੈਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧਨ ॥
Jain Maarag Sanjam Ath Saadhhan
||
जैन मारग संजम अति साधन ॥
You may adopt the self-mortifying
ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines;
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਵੈ ॥
Nimakh Nimakh Kar Sareer
Kattaavai ||
निमख निमख करि सरीरु कटावै ॥
Piece by piece, you may cut your
body apart;
ਤਉ ਭੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Tho Bhee Houmai Mail N Jaavai ||
तउ भी हउमै मैलु न जावै ॥
But even so, the filth of your ego
shall not depart.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Har Kae Naam Samasar Kashh Naahi
||
हरि के नाम समसरि कछु नाहि ॥
There is nothing equal to the Name
of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

मन कामना तीरथ देह छुटै ॥
With your mind filled with desire,
you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage;
ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੁਟੈ ॥
Garab Gumaan N Man Thae Huttai ||
गरबु गुमानु न मन ते हुटै ॥
But even so, egotistical pride shall
not be removed from your mind.
ਸੋਚ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
Soch Karai Dhinas Ar Raath ||
सोच करै दिनसु अरु राति ॥
You may practice cleansing day and
night,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
Man Kee Mail N Than Thae Jaath ||
मन की मैलु न तन ते जाति ॥
But the filth of your mind shall not
leave your body.
ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
Eis Dhaehee Ko Bahu Saadhhanaa
Karai ||
इसु देही कउ बहु साधना करै ॥
You may subject your body to all
sorts of disciplines,
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਟਰੈ ॥
Man Thae Kabehoo N Bikhiaa Ttarai
||
मन ते कबहू न बिखिआ टरै ॥
But your mind will never be rid of
its corruption.
ਜਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
Jal Dhhovai Bahu Dhaeh Aneeth ||
जलि धोवै बहु देह अनीति ॥
You may wash this transitory body
with loads of water,
ਸੁਧ ਕਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
Sudhh Kehaa Hoe Kaachee Bheeth ||
सुध कहा होइ काची भीति ॥
But how can a wall of mud be
washed clean?
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਊਚ ॥

||
मन हरि के नाम की महिमा ऊच ॥
O my mind, the Glorious Praise of
the Name of the Lord is the highest;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥

नानक नामि उधरे पतित बहु मूच ॥३॥
O Nanak, the Naam has saved so
many of the worst sinners. ||3||
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥

बहुतु सिआणप जम का भउ बिआपै ॥
Even with great cleverness, the
fear of death clings to you.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥

अनिक जतन करि त्रिसन ना ध्रापै ॥
You try all sorts
of things, but your thirst is still not satisfied.
ਭੇਖ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
Bhaekh Anaek Agan Nehee Bujhai ||
भेख अनेक अगनि नही बुझै ॥
Wearing various
religious robes, the fire is not extinguished.
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਹੀ ਸਿਝੈ ॥
Kott Oupaav Dharageh Nehee Sijhai
||
कोटि उपाव दरगह नही सिझै ॥
Even making millions of efforts,
you shall not be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
Shhoottas Naahee Oobh Paeiaal ||
छूटसि नाही ऊभ पइआलि ॥
You cannot escape to the heavens,
or to the nether regions,
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
Mohi Biaapehi Maaeiaa Jaal ||
मोहि बिआपहि माइआ जालि ॥
If you are entangled in emotional
attachment and the net of Maya.
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਜਮੁ ਡਾਨੈ ॥

अवर करतूति सगली जमु डानै ॥
All other efforts are punished by
the Messenger of Death,
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
Govindh Bhajan Bin Thil Nehee
Maanai ||
गोविंद भजन बिनु तिलु नही मानै ॥
Which accepts nothing at all,
except meditation on the Lord of the Universe.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Har Kaa Naam Japath Dhukh Jaae ||
हरि का नामु जपत दुखु जाइ ॥
Chanting the Name of the Lord,
sorrow is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
Naanak Bolai Sehaj Subhaae ||4||
नानक बोलै सहजि सुभाइ ॥४॥
O Nanak, chant it with intuitive
ease. ||4||
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
Chaar Padhaarathh Jae Ko Maagai
||
चारि पदारथ जे को मागै ॥
One who prays for the four
cardinal blessings
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Saadhh Janaa Kee Saevaa Laagai ||
साध जना की सेवा लागै ॥
Should commit himself to the
service of the Saints.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
Jae Ko Aapunaa Dhookh Mittaavai
||
जे को आपुना दूखु मिटावै ॥
If you wish to erase your sorrows,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Har Har Naam Ridhai Sadh Gaavai
||
हरि हरि नामु रिदै सद गावै ॥
Sing the Name of the Lord, Har,
Har, within your heart.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ॥
Jae Ko Apunee Sobhaa Lorai ||
जे को अपुनी सोभा लोरै ॥
If you long for honor for
yourself,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ ॥
Saadhhasang Eih Houmai Shhorai ||
साधसंगि इह हउमै छोरै ॥
Then renounce your ego in the
Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
Jae Ko Janam Maran Thae Ddarai ||
जे को जनम मरण ते डरै ॥
If you fear the cycle of birth and
death,
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
Saadhh Janaa Kee Saranee Parai ||
साध जना की सरनी परै ॥
Then seek the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
Jis Jan Ko Prabh Dharas Piaasaa
||
जिसु जन कउ प्रभ दरस पिआसा ॥
Those who thirst for the Blessed
Vision of God's Darshan
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
Naanak Thaa Kai Bal Bal Jaasaa

नानक ता कै बलि बलि जासा ॥५॥
- Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice
to them. ||5||

सगल पुरख महि पुरखु प्रधानु ॥
Among all persons, the supreme
person is the one

Abhimaan ||
साधसंगि जा का मिटै अभिमानु ॥
Who gives up his egotistical pride
in the Company of the Holy.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
Aapas Ko Jo Jaanai Neechaa ||
आपस कउ जो जाणै नीचा ॥
One who sees himself as lowly,
ਸੋਊ ਗਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
Sooo Ganeeai Sabh Thae Oochaa ||
सोऊ गनीऐ सभ ते ऊचा ॥
Shall be accounted as the highest of
all.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥

जा का मनु होइ सगल की रीना ॥
One whose mind is the dust of all,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥

Cheenaa ||
हरि हरि नामु तिनि घटि घटि चीना ॥
Recognizes the Name of the Lord,
Har, Har, in each and every heart.
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਨਾ ॥
Man Apunae Thae Buraa Mittaanaa
||
मन अपुने ते बुरा मिटाना ॥
One who eradicates cruelty from
within his own mind,
ਪੇਖੈ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ॥
Paekhai Sagal Srisatt Saajanaa ||
पेखै सगल स्रिसटि साजना ॥
Looks upon all the world as his
friend.
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਜਨ ਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
Sookh Dhookh Jan Sam
Dhrisattaethaa ||
सूख दूख जन सम द्रिसटेता ॥
One who looks upon pleasure and pain
as one and the same,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪਾ ॥੬॥
Naanak Paap Punn Nehee Laepaa

नानक पाप पुंन नही लेपा ॥६॥
O Nanak, is not affected by sin or
virtue. ||6||
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕਉ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
Niradhhan Ko Dhhan Thaero Naao ||
निरधन कउ धनु तेरो नाउ ॥
To the poor, Your Name is wealth.
ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
Nithhaavae Ko Naao Thaeraa Thhaao
||
निथावे कउ नाउ तेरा थाउ ॥
To the homeless, Your Name is home.
ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Nimaanae Ko Prabh Thaero Maan ||
निमाने कउ प्रभ तेरो मानु ॥
To the dishonored, You, O God, are
honor.
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal Ghattaa Ko Dhaevahu Dhaan
||
सगल घटा कउ देवहु दानु ॥
To all, You are the Giver of gifts.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
Karan Karaavanehaar Suaamee ||
करन करावनहार सुआमी ॥
O Creator Lord, Cause of causes, O
Lord and Master,
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Sagal Ghattaa Kae Antharajaamee
||
सगल घटा के अंतरजामी ॥
Inner-knower, Searcher of all
hearts:
ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
Apanee Gath Mith Jaanahu Aapae ||
अपनी गति मिति जानहु आपे ॥
You alone know Your own condition
and state.
ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
Aapan Sang Aap Prabh Raathae ||
आपन संगि आपि प्रभ राते ॥
You Yourself, God, are imbued with
Yourself.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
Thumharee Ousathath Thum Thae Hoe
||
तुम्हरी उसतति तुम ते होइ ॥
You alone can celebrate Your
Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
Naanak Avar N Jaanas Koe ||7||
नानक अवरु न जानसि कोइ ॥७॥
O Nanak, no one else knows. ||7||
ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਧਰਮੁ ॥

सरब धरम महि स्रेसट धरमु ॥
Of all religions, the best religion
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮੁ ॥

हरि को नामु जपि निरमल करमु ॥
Is to chant the Name of the Lord and
maintain pure conduct.
ਸਗਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sagal Kiraaa Mehi Ootham Kiriaa

सगल क्रिआ महि ऊतम किरिआ ॥
Of all religious rituals, the most
sublime ritual
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
Saadhhasang Dhuramath Mal Hiriaa
||
साधसंगि दुरमति मलु हिरिआ ॥
Is to erase the filth of the dirty
mind in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਗਲ ਉਦਮ ਮਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
Sagal Oudham Mehi Oudham Bhalaa

सगल उदम महि उदमु भला ॥
Of all efforts, the best effort
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਸਦਾ ॥

हरि का नामु जपहु जीअ सदा ॥
Is to chant the Name of the Lord in
the heart, forever.
ਸਗਲ ਬਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥

सगल बानी महि अम्रित बानी ॥
Of all speech, the most ambrosial
speech
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
Har Ko Jas Sun Rasan Bakhaanee ||
हरि को जसु सुनि रसन बखानी ॥
Is to hear the Lord's Praise and
chant it with the tongue.
ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਊਤਮ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal Thhaan Thae Ouhu Ootham
Thhaan ||
सगल थान ते ओहु ऊतम थानु ॥
Of all places, the most sublime
place,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Jih Ghatt Vasai Har Naam

नानक जिह घटि वसै हरि नामु ॥८॥३॥
O Nanak, is that heart in which the
Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||

What is your origin, and what is

He who fashioned, adorned and
decorated you

गरभ अगनि महि जिनहि उबारिआ ॥
In the fire of the womb, He
preserved you.
ਬਾਰ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੈ ਦੂਧ ॥
Baar Bivasathhaa Thujhehi Piaarai
Dhoodhh ||
बार बिवसथा तुझहि पिआरै दूध ॥
In your infancy, He gave you milk to
drink.
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਸੂਧ ॥
Bhar Joban Bhojan Sukh Soodhh ||
भरि जोबन भोजन सुख सूध ॥
In the flower of your youth, He gave
you food, pleasure and understanding.
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਾਕ ਸੈਨ ॥

बिरधि भइआ ऊपरि साक सैन ॥
As you grow old, family and friends
ਮੁਖਿ ਅਪਿਆਉ ਬੈਠ ਕਉ ਦੈਨ ॥
Mukh Apiaao Baith Ko Dhain ||
मुखि अपिआउ बैठ कउ दैन ॥
Are there to feed you as you rest.
ਇਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੁ ਗੁਨੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

This worthless person has not appreciated
in the least, all the good deeds done for him.

सुखदाई पवनु पावकु अमुला ॥
You have peaceful breezes and
priceless fire.

You are provided with all the
necessities of life.
ਦੀਨੇ ਹਸਤ ਪਾਵ ਕਰਨ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਰਸਨਾ ॥

दीने हसत पाव करन नेत्र रसना ॥
He gave you hands, feet, ears, eyes
and tongue,
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਵਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਚਨਾ ॥
Thisehi Thiaag Avar Sang Rachanaa

तिसहि तिआगि अवर संगि रचना ॥
And yet, you forsake Him and attach
yourself to others.
ਐਸੇ ਦੋਖ ਮੂੜ ਅੰਧ ਬਿਆਪੇ ॥

ऐसे दोख मूड़ अंध बिआपे ॥
Such sinful mistakes cling to the
blind fools;

From beginning to end, He is our
Protector,
ਤਿਸ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਕਰੈ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥

तिस सिउ प्रीति न करै गवारु ॥
And yet, the ignorant do not give
their love to Him.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

जा की सेवा नव निधि पावै ॥
Serving Him, the nine treasures are
obtained,
ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Thaa Sio Moorraa Man Nehee Laavai
||
ता सिउ मूड़ा मनु नही लावै ॥
And yet, the foolish do not link
their minds with Him.
ਜੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥

जो ठाकुरु सद सदा हजूरे ॥
Our Lord and Master is Ever-present,
forever and ever,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਅੰਧਾ ਜਾਨਤ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
Thaa Ko Andhhaa Jaanath Dhoorae
||
ता कउ अंधा जानत दूरे ॥
And yet, the spiritually blind
believe that He is far away.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Jaa Kee Ttehal Paavai Dharageh Maan

जा की टहल पावै दरगह मानु ॥
In His service, one obtains honor in
the Court of the Lord,
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਰੈ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਜਾਨੁ ॥
Thisehi Bisaarai Mugadhh Ajaan ||
तिसहि बिसारै मुगधु अजानु ॥
And yet, the ignorant fool forgets
Him.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਇਹੁ ਭੂਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
Sadhaa Sadhaa Eihu Bhoolanehaar
||
सदा सदा इहु भूलनहारु ॥
Forever and ever, this person makes
mistakes;
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

नानक राखनहारु अपारु ॥३॥
O Nanak, the Infinite Lord is our
Saving Grace. ||3||
ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਉਡੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਚੈ ॥

रतनु तिआगि कउडी संगि रचै ॥
Forsaking the jewel, they are
engrossed with a shell.
ਸਾਚੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਝੂਠ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਚੈ ॥
Saach Shhodd Jhooth Sang Machai
||
साचु छोडि झूठ संगि मचै ॥
They renounce Truth and embrace
falsehood.
ਜੋ ਛਡਨਾ ਸੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
Jo Shhaddanaa S Asathhir Kar
Maanai ||
जो छडना सु असथिरु करि मानै ॥
That which passes away, they believe
to be permanent.
ਜੋ ਹੋਵਨੁ ਸੋ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਨੈ ॥
Jo Hovan So Dhoor Paraanai ||
जो होवनु सो दूरि परानै ॥
That which is immanent, they believe
to be far off.
ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
Shhodd Jaae This Kaa Sram Karai
||
छोडि जाइ तिस का स्रमु करै ॥
They struggle for what they must
eventually leave.
ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
Sang Sehaaee This Pareharai ||
संगि सहाई तिसु परहरै ॥
They turn away from the Lord, their
Help and Support, who is always with them.
ਚੰਦਨ ਲੇਪੁ ਉਤਾਰੈ ਧੋਇ ॥
Chandhan Laep Outhaarai Dhhoe ||
चंदन लेपु उतारै धोइ ॥
They wash off the sandalwood paste;
ਗਰਧਬ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਸਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Garadhhab Preeth Bhasam Sang Hoe
||
गरधब प्रीति भसम संगि होइ ॥
Like donkeys, they are in love with
the mud.
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
Andhh Koop Mehi Pathith Bikaraal
||
अंध कूप महि पतित बिकराल ॥
They have fallen into the deep, dark
pit.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥

नानक काढि लेहु प्रभ दइआल ॥४॥
Nanak: lift them up and save them, O
Merciful Lord God! ||4||
ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਪਸੂ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਸ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
Karathooth Pasoo Kee Maanas Jaath
||
करतूति पसू की मानस जाति ॥
They belong to the human species,
but they act like animals.
ਲੋਕ ਪਚਾਰਾ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
Lok Pachaaraa Karai Dhin Raath ||
लोक पचारा करै दिनु राति ॥
They curse others day and night.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Baahar Bhaekh Anthar Mal Maaeiaa
||
बाहरि भेख अंतरि मलु माइआ ॥
Outwardly, they wear religious
robes, but within is the filth of Maya.
ਛਪਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥
Shhapas Naahi Kashh Karai
Shhapaaeiaa ||
छपसि नाहि कछु करै छपाइआ ॥
They cannot conceal this, no matter
how hard they try.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥
Baahar Giaan Dhhiaan Eisanaan ||
बाहरि गिआन धिआन इसनान ॥
Outwardly, they display knowledge,
meditation and purification,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
Anthar Biaapai Lobh Suaan ||
अंतरि बिआपै लोभु सुआनु ॥
But within clings the dog of greed.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਆਹ ॥
Anthar Agan Baahar Than Suaah ||
अंतरि अगनि बाहरि तनु सुआह ॥
The fire of desire rages within;
outwardly they apply ashes to their bodies.
ਗਲਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੈਸੇ ਤਰੈ ਅਥਾਹ ॥
Gal Paathhar Kaisae Tharai
Athhaah ||
गलि पाथर कैसे तरै अथाह ॥
There is a stone around their neck -
how can they cross the unfathomable ocean?
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥

जा कै अंतरि बसै प्रभु आपि ॥
Those, within whom God Himself

- O Nanak, those humble beings are
intuitively absorbed in the Lord. ||5||

सुनि अंधा कैसे मारगु पावै ॥
By listening, how can the blind find
the path?
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਓੜਿ ਨਿਬਹਾਵੈ ॥
Kar Gehi Laehu Ourr Nibehaavai ||
करु गहि लेहु ओड़ि निबहावै ॥
Take hold of his hand, and then he
can reach his destination.
ਕਹਾ ਬੁਝਾਰਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਡੋਰਾ ॥
Kehaa Bujhaarath Boojhai Ddoraa
||
कहा बुझारति बूझै डोरा ॥
How can a riddle be understood by
the deaf?
ਨਿਸਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਮਝੈ ਭੋਰਾ ॥

निसि कहीऐ तउ समझै भोरा ॥
Say 'night', and he thinks you said
'day'.
ਕਹਾ ਬਿਸਨਪਦ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁੰਗ ॥

कहा बिसनपद गावै गुंग ॥
How can the mute sing the Songs of
the Lord?
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਤਉ ਭੀ ਸੁਰ ਭੰਗ ॥
Jathan Karai Tho Bhee Sur Bhang
||
जतन करै तउ भी सुर भंग ॥
He may try, but his voice will fail
him.
ਕਹ ਪਿੰਗੁਲ ਪਰਬਤ ਪਰ ਭਵਨ ॥
Keh Pingul Parabath Par Bhavan ||
कह पिंगुल परबत पर भवन ॥
How can the cripple climb up the
mountain?
ਨਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਊਹਾ ਉਸੁ ਗਵਨ ॥
Nehee Hoth Oohaa Ous Gavan ||
नही होत ऊहा उसु गवन ॥
He simply cannot go there.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਦੀਨੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
Karathaar Karunaa Mai Dheen
Baenathee Karai ||
करतार करुणा मै दीनु बेनती करै ॥
O Creator, Lord of Mercy - Your
humble servant prays;

संगि सहाई सु आवै न चीति ॥
The Lord, our Help and Support, is
always with us, but the mortal does not remember Him.
ਜੋ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
Jo Bairaaee Thaa Sio Preeth ||
जो बैराई ता सिउ प्रीति ॥
He shows love to his enemies.
ਬਲੂਆ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ॥
Balooaa Kae Grih Bheethar Basai
||
बलूआ के ग्रिह भीतरि बसै ॥
He lives in a castle of sand.
ਅਨਦ ਕੇਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਸੈ ॥
Anadh Kael Maaeiaa Rang Rasai ||
अनद केल माइआ रंगि रसै ॥
He enjoys the games of pleasure and
the tastes of Maya.
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤਿ ॥
Dhrirr Kar Maanai Manehi
Pratheeth ||
द्रिड़ु करि मानै मनहि प्रतीति ॥
He believes them to be permanent -
this is the belief of his mind.
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮੂੜੇ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
Kaal N Aavai Moorrae Cheeth ||
कालु न आवै मूड़े चीति ॥
Death does not even come to mind for
the fool.
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮੋਹ ॥
Bair Birodhh Kaam Krodhh Moh ||
बैर बिरोध काम क्रोध मोह ॥
Hate, conflict, sexual desire,
anger, emotional attachment,
ਝੂਠ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਲੋਭ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ॥
Jhooth Bikaar Mehaa Lobh Dhhroh
||
झूठ बिकार महा लोभ ध्रोह ॥
Falsehood, corruption, immense greed
and deceit:
ਇਆਹੂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਿਹਾਨੇ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ॥
Eiaahoo Jugath Bihaanae Kee Janam
||
इआहू जुगति बिहाने कई जनम ॥
So many lifetimes are wasted in
these ways.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਆਪਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਮ ॥੭॥

नानक राखि लेहु आपन करि करम ॥७॥

जीउ पिंडु सभु तेरी रासि ॥
This body and soul are all Your

तुम मात पिता हम बारिक तेरे ॥
You are our mother and father; we
are Your children.

कोइ न जानै तुमरा अंतु ॥
No one knows Your limits.

O Highest of the High, Most Generous
God,

सगल समग्री तुमरै सूत्रि धारी ॥
The whole creation is strung on Your
thread.

तुम ते होइ सु आगिआकारी ॥
That which has come from You is
under Your Command.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

तुमरी गति मिति तुम ही जानी ॥
You alone know Your state and
